The primary goal of the left today appears to be suppression of speech.
Which makes total sense of your goal is to eliminate your opponents. All you have to do is to get their ideas labeled as hateful, get a mob to shout them down, get the press to denounce them and their ideas, get the courts to make the expression of their beliefs illegal and fine or jail those who persist in their “hateful” behavior, and you have pretty much won the day. We see this going on all over America today.
In Europe, though, the left has taken it one step farther. They have partnered with Islam. Andrew McCarthy explains:
[Muhammad’s marriage to a nine year old] is an accurate account of authoritative Islamic scripture. Yet it can no longer safely be discussed in Europe, thanks to the extortionate threat of violence and intimidation — specifically, of jihadist terrorism and the Islamist grievance industry that slipstreams behind it. Under a ruling by the so-called European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), free speech has been supplanted by sharia blasphemy standards. …
What the vestiges of Western civilization are coming to: I say something that is true; it hurts your feelings, so — of course — you blow up a building; and it’s my fault.
Newsweek provided some more detail of the court’s decision:
The ECHR ruled that while religions were not exempt from criticism or denial of their beliefs, the woman’s comments were not objective and lacked historical context. It also believed her language “could only be understood as having been aimed at demonstrating that Muhammad was not worthy of worship” and were designed to belittle Islam.
Where does this leave Christians? We may not usually call him a paedophile but orthodox Christians clearly do not believe Muhammad or Allah to be worthy of worship. Only the God of the Bible, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is to be worshipped. Depending on where we live, then, it leaves us somewhere between being labeled hateful and intolerant and dead.
Of course, this is nothing new. Christians were stoned in Jerusalem and fed to the kinds and used for torches in Rome, and burned at the stake in England. Our response to these and other persecution is to be grateful to be deemed worthy to suffer with Christ.
It is also true that there has been persecution of people by those who claimed to be Christian. The difference is that those “Christians” were wrong; the Bible does not teach the use of the metal sword by the church. Unlike the Koran and the playbook of the left which embrace the use of government to enforce Sharia and political correctness.
