The traditional view of creation that has been held almost unanimously throughout church history is that creation took place over six 24 hour days. Augustine seems to have believed instead in instantaneous creation, but no prominent members of the church believed in a creation scenario that allowed for the earth to be millions or billions of years old.
That is until Charles Darwin and friends came on the scene in the 1800s, anxious to undermine the authority of Scripture.
Many in the church, particularly in the Church of England, jumped to their assistance. And many in the church have been doing the same ever since, attempting to make the church seem relevant by agreeing with speculative scientific theories embraced by a culture that is raging against God (see Psalm 2).
Not only does the church’s accommodation of Darwin undermine Scripture, but it also contradicts the Scriptural view of liberty upon which our country was founded. For more on that, here is David Coppedge:
The Darwinian worldview that allegedly freed people from ‘religion’ actually enslaves them to the worst kind of tyranny.
In the United States today, Americans will celebrate Independence Day with parties, barbecues, and fireworks. Hopefully mixed in with the fun is some appreciation for the founding principles of America:
All men are created equal
Human rights
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
Liberty and justice for all
E pluribus unum (out of many, one)
In God we trust
The American dreamAll of these ideals are profoundly anti-Darwinian. The secular worldview in vogue today, resting on Darwin’s advocacy of nature run by unguided natural processes, cannot derive any of these. In fact, the opposite is true: secularism undermines every one of these, and historically, has fought against them.
