Our culture’s rejection of experts these days is well founded. Experts over the centuries have told us the Earth is the center of the universe, that it is a good idea to bleed sick people, that creation is billions of years old, and that humans are the primary driver of climate change.
But it is not just secular experts that we should be wary of. As Doug Wilson points out, there is plenty of mushy thought to be found in the church, including in evangelical leaders:
We live in a time that is obsessed with class, race, and gender. And so—you guessed it—our evangelical thought-leaders have come to believe that our authentic testimony to a troubled generation that does not know the Lord depends on us coming up with a few gut sobs of our own with regard to class, race, and gender. And it is not enough for the gut sobs to be perfunctory, but rather they have to be the kind that arise from the chthonic regions. Everybody hatesdilatory gut sobs.
