Below are our notes on things to see in the United Kingdom. We didn’t get to see all of these, but someone has thought them worth seeing, so I thought I’d include them here for anyone who might be planning a trip.
Cotswolds Travel Notes
Places to Eat:
-
The Wheatshef in Northleach is very good. A small inn/pub that has won many awards. Inside is cozy and outside is a lovely garden.
-
The Swan in Swinbrook – excellent and village/church are charming with an interesting history of The Mitford Family.
-
The Fox Inn – Lower Oddington
-
Lords of the Manor – more precious, located in Upper Slaughter. Lower/Upper Slaughter lovely villages. Manor is a bit tricky to find, just keep following the main road thru villages until it comes up on your right side. Great for tea or a drink as well. VERY English!
-
Made by Bob – located in Cirencester, which is a beautiful Roman city, about 25 min. from Sherborne. Lovely cathedral…do much of my shopping here. Made by Bob is a bistro located within The Cornhall…they have some take away as well…yummy!
-
Daylesford Organic Farm- NOT TO BE MISSED! Fantastic restaurant, take away, home items, garden shop and yoga retreat/spa.
-
The Wild Rabbit – Kingham, just a couple of miles from above mentioned Daylesford and owned by the same woman. Excellent food! Posh set…lovely.
Cotswold “to see”
-
Blenheim Palace – Woodstock, about 35 min. from Sherborne. Churchill’s family home and gardens. Fascinating history. Feathers Hotel in village of Woodstock excellent for lunch or tea.
-
Sudley Castle – about 30 min. from Sherborne. Beautiful and the family still is in residence.
-
Highgrove – Prince Charles residence and garden just outside of Bath. Gardens only open to public August and September. Go to website, you will need advance purchase tickets.
-
Bath – Jane Austin territory, about 1 1/2 hours away. Ancient Roman city…tour of The Roman Baths is actually quite interesting. Number One Royal Crescent, museum depicting life during the late 18th C, beautiful. So much to do and see in Bath…architecture etc…The Royal Crescent is a hotel and restaurant, excellent and location is so beautiful. You will need a booking in advance.
-
Stonehenge – 1 1/2 hours away
-
Quite honestly, just driving from village to village is fun and most have historic walks open to the public. Look online under Cotswold walks. Some villages that stand out: Broadway ( Lygon Arms Hotel for a meal), Chipping Camden, Stow on the Wold for antiques, Bourton on the Water. Lower/Upper Slaughter.

Other Nearby Options: GREAT COXWELL BARN, The Vyne, Museum of the Great Western Railway, Windsor Castle
